Boa Vista is a quiet island, well suited to families: big sandy beaches, little traffic, hotels with pools and kids' activities, and a peaceful pace. A few precautions are needed with younger children though, above all against the sun. Here is how to prepare the trip and have the best possible week.
Before you go: the formalities
Every child needs their own passport valid for at least 6 months after arrival. EASE, the mandatory online registration before entering Cape Verde, applies to all travellers: only children under 2 are exempt. Count about €31 in fees per person concerned, and complete it a few days ahead on the official site ease.gov.cv. Our article “Preparing your trip to Boa Vista” explains the whole procedure.
The sun: priority number one
Under an almost always clear sky, with wind giving a false sense of coolness, sunburn comes quickly. For children: high-protection sunscreen reapplied every two hours, UV-protective t-shirts for swimming, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and breaks in the shade during the hottest hours (roughly noon to 4 pm). Make sure they drink regularly, even if they don't seem thirsty.
Which activities by age?
Health, meals and good habits
- Pack a small kit: your usual medicines, something to bring down a fever, saline solution, plasters, soothing after-sun
- Bottled water for drinking and for brushing teeth
- Nappies, formula and baby food: bring enough, choice on the island is limited
- Travel insurance and a check with your doctor for current health recommendations
- A flexible rhythm: activity in the morning, rest and swimming in the afternoon, simple meals in the evening
🌊 Swimming. On the Atlantic side, waves and currents can be strong. For children, choose beaches known for calm water or the hotel pool, never take your eyes off them in the water and follow local advice.
